Hi, Joan,

You asked -

> Does anyone know where the marriage licence/banns are held for St WILFRIDS
> CATHOLIC CHURCH, Northwich, Cheshire, for around 1876 onwards?

The best source for information about Catholic registers for missions in
Great Britain founded before 1880 is a series of six books by M. Gandy, of
which the one for the North West of England is "Catholic Missions and
Registers 1700 - 1880, Volume 5, North West England" compiled and published
by M. Gandy, 2nd Edition, 1998 (ISBN 0 9528879 2 4). These books list all
the known missions established before 1880 together with the whereabouts of
all the registers including the ones still with the Parish Priest.

The Catholic mission in Northwich was established in 1830 and until about
1855 was served from Crewe. This shows that the Religious Registers of
Marriages kept by the clergy have been deposited in the Cheshire County
Record Office in Chester. If you look in Genuki www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng
and go to the Cheshire page you will find details of the Cheshire Record
Office under Archives.

You then say

> I have been looking for the marriage between
> ELLEN KILPATRICK, born 1857, father HUGH KILPATRICK and
> CHARLES TOMLINSON, born 1855, father JOHN TOMLINSON

There is a CheshireBMD site at
http://www.cheshirebmd.org.uk/cheshirebmd/marriages.html which has a very
good coverage of the civil marriages in Cheshire between 1837 and 1900+. I
have checked for this marriage, but drew a blank. Checking the coverage of
CheshireBMD shows that the Nantwich Registration District is only included
from 1856. This suggests that the marriage MAY have taken place before 1856.
If it did, then hopefully it will appear soon. You will find it listed as a
Nantwich Civil Marriage because the marriage took place in a Catholic Church
but the civil law required that the Registrar was present for the marriage
to be recognised in law.

Hope this helps

Jim Lancaster (Bury, Lancs.)
