The Vitzhums were a well-known family here in Trinity County early days. They had the big ranchat the bottom of the grade on highway 299 we still call Vitzhum Grade. A number of headstones in the Weaverville cemetery have the Vitzhum name. I've read a number of stories about the family in the microfilm issues of the Trinity Journal newspaper available on micro film at the Jake Jackson Museum and the Weaverville library. The museum has booklets with local history stories, some of which mention the Vitzhums. A visit to Trinity County would be well worth your time.
