************************
MARRIED -- in Sonora, July 5, by _____ [blank as written], Mr. Wm. F.
COOPER to Miss Lavina HALL, of this city. [With the above we were favored
with a supply of cake and wine, which were partaken of by all hands, and
wishes for their future happiness were unanimously expressed.]
MARRIED -- at Jamestown, July 1, by Rev. Mr. CALDWELL; Mr. Geo. GRIFFITHS
to Miss Mary McCREERY, both of Jamestown, and formerly of Philadelphia.
DIED -- in Sonora, July 2d, 1860, Johanna, daughter of John and Fermina
MABLSTEDT, aged 2 years & 2 months.
DIED -- in Jamestown, July 1st, 1860, of a disease of the heart, Hon. P.M.
HALDEMAN, aged 36 years. [The deceased was a native of Columbia, Lancaster
county, Pennsylvania, and came to California in the year 1850 or '51, and
took up his residence on the Tuolumne river, where he resided until the
fall of 1858, when he was selected by the democracy to represent them in
the Assembly of the State. At Sacramento he at once took a high position
among his colleagues, and proved himself one of the truest and best
representatives Tuolumne ever had. Soon after his return from his labors at
the capital he located at Jamestown, where he continued to reside until the
day of his death. Mr. HALDEMAN was an universal favorite with all who knew
him, and his death has cast a gloom over his large circle of acquaintances.
It will be gratifying to his friends and relatives in the States to know
that every attention was paid him during his illness, and his remains were
followed to the grave by a large concourse of his friends.]
>J.W. DUMPHRIES, the well known Irish comedian, died in Benicia on Monday
last, after a brief illness.
SUICIDE -- Joseph A. POST committed suicide in San Francisco on Monday
last, by cutting his throat with a razor. He had made several attempts
previously to take his life, and was in consequence confined in the county
hospital, where he finally succeeded in his rash purpose.
>A sluice robber named Horace BEACH was recently shot and killed while
engaged in his rascally business at Pine Grove, Sierra county.
DIVORCES -- Eliza Ann MARTIN, wife of Chas. S. MARTIN, and Margaret Jane
BLAKE, wife of Edward BLAKE, have applied for decrees of divorce in the
12th District Court, at San Francisco.
DEATH of an ELEPHANT -- The well known performing elephant, Victoria,
belonging to the Dan RICE circus, died recently from injuries received in
attempting to swim the Stanislaus river, while on the way from Columbia to
Murphy's.
MINING ACCIDENTS -- Mr. F. HANKS, an old resident of Columbia, had his leg
broke on Friday last, at Jackass Gulch, by a boulder falling upon it. On
the same day a man named Owen DONNEGAN was seriously injured by the caving
of a bank of earth in his claim on Saw Mill Flat. So says the 'Times.'
>The trial of the unfortunate man COSTELLO for murder, which has created a
deep interest throughout the county, was commenced in the District Court on
Friday, but up to the time of our going to press the requisite number of
jurors had not yet been obtained.
>The Supreme Court has reversed judgment in the case of the People ex rel.
McCAULEY and FERRIS vs. S.H. BROOKS, and ordered the District Court to
issue a peremptory mandamna to the State Controller to issue warrants to
the Treasurer in favor of the relators. The amount thus order to be paid is
$300,000!
>Col. J.M. STUART returned last Monday from his visit to the Atlantic
States, and received a cordial welcome from everybody.
MORRIS WURKHEIM Esq. -- This gentleman, long a resident among us, where he
has been engaged in mercantile pursuits -- left us this morning for the
purpose of taking up his residence in San Francisco. We part with him with
regret, for, by long association, a strong friendship had grown up between
us. He has ever proven himself a good citizen and an enterprising merchant.
We trust he may meet with eminent success in the new home to which he is
going, and that he may draw around him hosts of friends.
ELECTION of OFFICERS -- The Dashaways of this place, at their regular
business meeting on Tuesday night last, chose the following officers to
serve during the ensuing 6 months:
President, John R. VALLEAU
Vice Presidents, Dan'l SEWELL and Robert FERRAL
Secretary, Solomon M. TAYLOR
Treasurer, Chas. BURT
THE SONORA DASHAWAYS -- This temperance society, which organized about 6
months since, participated in the celebration at this place on Wednesday
last, and attracted considerable attention. But little over one-third of
the members turned out upon the occasion; and yet their numbers presented a
fine appearance. They were really an intelligent, good-looking body of men,
and we rejoice at the fact of having a flourishing organization of this
kind in our midst. Previous to joining in the procession the society was
presented with a large and handsome wreath by a little daughter of Mr.
Chas. BURT, of this city. This was carried through the day suspended from
their beautiful new banner. The thanks of the society were returned to the
pretty young miss for her appropriate and acceptable present.
RENDER UNTO CESAR, &c. -- Last week we published on our outside a "local
jingle" headed "Very Good," and credited to the Mariposa 'Gazette,' the
credit of which properly belongs to the Mariposa 'Star.' We make this
correction because we have noticed on more than one occasion that the
former paper has received credit for witty squibs originating with its
cotemporary. Messrs. HOLMES and LAWRENCE, editors of the above papers, are
both well known wits, and succeed in making their respective journals among
the most interesting in the State.
EXCITING RACE -- A preacher by name of WEST was lately chased a long
distance by huge grizzly, near Scott's Ranch, Santa Cruz county. The race
was hotly contested, but the reverend gentleman made good his escape.
EXPRESS -- Mr. J.F. McFARLANE, ex-deputy sheriff of this county, has
started an express from Sonora to Mono Lake and Washoe. Sam. BOOSE is the
agent of the express at this place.
>The Santa Cruz 'Sentinel' says that a valuable horse belonging to Mr. Asa
ELLIS was killed recently by a California lion.
DISTRICT COURT PROCEEDINGS -- The District Court, for the July Term, opened
