Miriam Elizabeth Hummel

Miriam Elizabeth Hummel, a longtime Davis resident, died at Sierra Health Care Convalescent Hospital on Nov. 29, 2001. She was 81. In June, she was diagnosed with leukemia.

She was born on April 5, 1920, in Warren, Pa., and came to California in the 1930s with her parents, Harold M. Hummel and Marjorie Fisher Hummel. The family settled in Berkeley, where Miriam Hummel earned two degrees from the University of California, a bachelor's degree in agricultural sciences in 1940 and a master's degree in nutrition in 1947. She was a member of Phi Beta Kappa.

She never married; her life was dedicated to higher education and caring for her parents. She retired from UC Davis in 1978 after 21 years of service as a librarian at Shields Library. From 1946 to 1954 she was an assistant home economist at Colorado A&M (State) University and, from 1941 to 1946 she was a teaching assistant in home economics at UC Berkeley.

She took care of her parents after they retired to Davis in the early 1960s. Her father died in 1975 and her mother died at age 104 on Dec. 24, 1998.

Miriam was a longtime member of the Core Area neighborhood and, like her mother, will be remembered by her friends, neighbors and loved ones as a kind, gentle, caring woman. She had a lifelong desire to learn and make the world a better place. She actively supported many charities, especially those working in the fields of education, medical research, the environment, and social services.

She rests in peace with her mother, father, and uncle at Oakland Cemetery in Warren, Pa., and is survived by nine first cousins.
