Evaristo Goethels Torres

Evaristo Goethels Torres died in Woodland Memorial Hospital Wednesday, April 3, 2002, at age 76.

Born on Aug. 29, 1925 in El Paso, Texas, Mr. Torres was the son of Silverio and Maclovia (Goethels) Torres. He had been a resident of Yolo County since 1962.

Mr. Torres and his family lived in the part of west Texas that adjoins New Mexico and most of the family settled in the Las Cruces, Deming, and Silver City area. At the onset of World War II, he answered his country's call to arms, and on Nov. 4, 1943, he went off to war. As a medical corpsman, with the 1880th MASH Unit of Camp Polk, La., he was to see action in the European Theater, earning the Victory Medal, American/European Theater Medals, Good Conduct Medal and Marksman, Sharpshooter and Expert Rifleman citations. After being discharged in October 1945, he returned home to work the trucking and transportation business. He decided to move to California in 1962, settling in Yolo County where he worked as the owner of a garden and landscaping service.

Mr. Torres is survived by his former wife, Natividad Torres; son, Gustavo Torres; and daughters, Yolanda Robles, Estela de la Cruz, Pat Jackson and Liz Torres, all of Woodland.

He also survived by his grandchildren, Evaristo Sandoval of San Francisco, Rachel Sandoval of Fairfield, Kym RobIes of San Diego, and Larry Robles, Ann Torres, Teresa Sandoval and Michelle Tauzer, all of Woodland; great-grandchildren, Annika Robles, Athena Yates and Ivan Robles; sister, Ophelia Poppy of Kansas; brothers, Victor Torres and Victor Torrez of Las Cruces, N.M.; and numerous nieces and nephews in California and New Mexico.

Respecting the wishes of Mr. Evaristo, no services are scheduled.

Interment will take place at Fort Bayard Veteran's Cemetery, Fort Bayard, N.M., with the family in attendance and appropriate military honors bestowed.

The family requests memorials be directed to the Sexual Assault & Domestic Violence Center, 927 Main St., Woodland, 95695; or to the American Red Cross.
