Ernest N. Chiulos
Ernest N. Chiulos, age 78, passed away peacefully June 30, 2002, at Woodland Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. Born in Roseville on April 18, 1924, to Nicholas and Diamando (Kotsifas) Chiulos, who had emigrated from Greece, Ernie was the youngest of six children.
Ernie, who graduated from Roseville High School in 1941, enjoyed acting in drama productions and was an accomplished violinist in the school orchestra. He continued to enjoy classical music throughout his life.
After enlisting in the U.S. Navy in 1943, Ernie received training as a pharmacist's mate and was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines, 1st Marine Division serving as a hospital corpsman in the battles of Guadacanal and Okinawa. He was awarded the Bronze Star for Valor, the Purple Heart battle wounds at Okinawa, the Asiatic Pacific Theatre Medal, the Victory Medal and the American Area Citation among other commendations.
After his separation from military service, Ernie met Bess Stathopul of Woodland. They were married on June 5, 1949, in a Greek Orthodox wedding ceremony conducted at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Woodland.
Ernie spent most of his career in the retail grocery business. He was well known in the community as the manager of the Stop-n-Shop Supermarket in Woodland for 25 years.
An active member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Woodland since 1949, Ernie served at various times as a member of the church choir and vestry.
In his leisure and during retirement, Ernie enjoyed the time he spent with his family, especially his grandchildren, giving advice, acting as "Mr. Fix-it" for family and friends, gardening and taking walks along the coast of Pacific Grove.
Ernie is survived by his wife of 53 years, Bess (Stathopul) Chiulos; son, Nicholas Chiulos and daughter-in-law Nanette Maysonave of Pacific Grove; daughter, Ellen Chiulos, son-in-law Rick Frassetto and granddaughter Gina of San Francisco; daughter, Cathy, son-in-law David Norcott and grandsons Matthew and Adam of Auburn; sisters, Kay Theros and Pauline Lourentzos of Sacramento; brother, Andy Chiulos of Roseville; sisters-in-law, Kay Stathopul and Julie Wahl of Woodland; and numerous nieces and nephews including Craig Wahl of Sacramento and Christopher Wahl of San Rafael.
Ernie will always remain in the hearts of his family and friends.
A memorial service is scheduled for 4 p.m., Saturday, July 13, 2002, at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 515 Second St., Woodland. Private inurnment will occur at a later date.
The family requests contributions in Ernie's memory be made to the St. Luke's Episcopal church Endowment Fund or to the Woodland Memorial Hospital Foundation.
