Patricia D. Moore
Patricia Dudley Moore died Oct. 16, 2000, in Davis after a long illness. Born April 1, 1932, in Martins Ferry, Ohio, she was 68. As an individual who dedicated her life to her family, her community and the arts, she will be deeply missed.
She was born and raised in Ohio. The youngest of four children, she was an exceptionally bright student and went on to receive her bachelor's degree in education from Ohio State University. While there, she met Charles V. Moore, who she married on Aug. 28, 1954.
Soon after their marriage, her generous and caring attitude became evident as she took care of Charles' mother, who had suffered from a stroke while he was serving his country overseas in the U.S. Navy. Upon her mother-in-law's successful recovery and Charles' return from the Navy, Pat and Charles decided to raise a family in Ohio, having two sons, Gregory Charles Moore (1956) and Bruce Dudley Moore (1958). In 1959, they moved to Davis, where they had their third child, a daughter, Rachel Suzanne Moore.
Pat and Charles lived in the same house in Davis since 1959, with the exception of two stints overseas, in India and Saudia Arabia. During these overseas excursions, she was responsible for raising the children, including their homeschooling.
She was active in the convergence between family and community, serving the PTA for 17 years, including five years as a board member. She was active in the Davis Parent Nursery School cooperative for four years, including serving as a board member for a year. She was also actively involved in numerous other organizations revolving around her children, including 4-H, Cub Scouts, Campfire Girls and the radical splinter group, the Happy Faces.
She returned to school to receive her master's degree from UC Davis in consumer economics. She subsequently became an organizer of the Davis Consumer Protection Bureau and Gov. Jerry Brown appointed her as the public member of the State of California Wine Grape Growers Advisory Board, which she served on for seven years.
She and friends launched their own business, GrannyPins, which created the GrannyPin Dolls. They later created the GrannyPins "Solar Dryer," a product that was once featured on Johnny Carson's "Tonight Show." She was also a well-known local landlord.
She was a stalwart supporter of women's issues: She served with the League of Women Voters for 10 years, including three as a board member. She also conducted personal finance courses directed toward single women at the Family Service Agency. She was an organizer of the International Women's Club in Riyadh, Saudia Arabia.
She served a diverse array of organizations and causes. She was involved with the University Farm Circle where she served as the newcomers co-chairman for two years. She served on various city and school bond advisory committees. She also was active at the university, including having served as the chairman of the consumer science graduate group, the dean's committee for consumer science graduate curriculum and the Davis consumers complaint committee.
She may best be remembered as a vocal and active supporter of the arts and her community. She served as a member of the Davis Civic Arts Commission for 10 years and as chair of the Davis Community Performing Arts Pavilion project for four years. She had been intimately involved in public radio as well, having served on the board of directors for KXPR/KXJZ, as well as served as the chair of the Davis Friends of FM 91, for six years.
She was a 30-year member of the Davis Art Center, including six years on the board of directors. She was active in the ballet world, having served as finance chairman for the Theatre Ballet of Sacramento for five years, as well as having served as finance chairman for the Pacific Regional Ballet Festival in 1980.
She is survived by her loving husband, Charles V. Moore of Davis. She is also survived by her children, Bruce D. Moore of Zephyr Cove, Nev., and Rachel S. Moore of Boston; and her sister, Dorthy Reynolds.
She was preceded in death by her son Gregory C. Moore, in 1999.
Friends are invited to attend a memorial service Friday at 3 p.m. at the Unitarian Church of Davis, 27074 Patwin Road. Interment will be private. Remembrances may be made in her name to the Sacramento Society for the Blind, 2750 24th St., Sacramento, CA 95818 or to the Unitarian Church of Davis.
