George M. Kihara

George M. Kihara, a longtime UC Davis staff research assistant, died at his Davis home on Sept. 1, 2003. He was 79.

Born in Los Angeles on April 20, 1924, he was a graduate of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. He worked in the UC Davis department of vegetable crops, specializing in the breeding of lettuce, for 31 years.

He also served in the U.S. Army Reserve for 27 years, attaining the rank of command sergeant major, and was an avid golfer.

He is survived by his wife Ann Kihara of Davis; daughters Beverly Marchione of Los Angeles and Naomi Mayekawa of Overland Park, Kan.; stepsons Jeffery C. Pierce of Spokane, Wash., and Victor A. Pierce of Dixon, Mo.; and five grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at Davis Christian Assembly, 3030 Sycamore Lane, at 3 p.m. Saturday.

Donations in his name may be made to the Davis Christian Assembly.
