Edna Alma Orth
Edna Alma Orth died in Woodland on Monday, Sept. 1, 2003, at age 88.
Mrs. Orth was born in Selby, South Dakota on Aug. 28, 1915 to Christoph and Margaretha (Pleinis) Nusz. She was a resident of Yolo County for 68 years. She came to California in 1935 where she worked at the Robert Stuhlmiller Ranch as a cook. On Oct. 20, 1937 she married Jacob P. Orth who she met on a blind date in South Dakota. She was a homemaker all of her adult life.
Mrs. Orth was a charter member of the American Lutheran Church and a member of the Knights Landing Garden Club. She volunteered her time at Travis Air Force Base Hospital writing letters and reading to the servicemen. She also made trips to the Weimar Sanitarium.
She was affectionately known as "Granny" to her grandchildren, friends and neighbors.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Jake Orth; grandsons Kenneth and Steven Hawley; parents Christoph and Margaretha Nusz; sisters Esther Banek, Engelena Stuhlmiller, Elise Stadel, and Hulda Berreth; brothers Ferdinand, Albert, Theodore, and Donald Nusz.
She is survived by her daughter Marlyn Knudson and husband Dennis; grandchildren Michael Hawley of Sparks, Nevada, Brenda Stewart and husband Scott, Janene Scoonover and husband Shawn, Denise Prigge and husband Tim of Woodland; great-grandchildren Elena Hawley of Sparks, Nevada, Stephanie and Holly Stewart, Sara and Justin Scoonover; sister Lillian Giese; brother Walter Nusz of Woodland; aunt Emily Pleinis of Herried, South Dakota; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
In her later years Edna enjoyed knitting and crocheting dishcloths and potholders sharing them with family, friends, and anyone she met from her doctor and nurse to the checker at the grocery store. She is also known for her homemade goodies which she shared with many.
Visitation will be held at McNary's Chapel on Monday, Sept. 8, 2003 from 6 to 8 p.m. The funeral service will be held at the American Lutheran Church Tuesday, Sept. 9, at 10 a.m., with interment to follow at Monument Hill Memorial Park, Woodland.
The family requests memorials be directed to American Lutheran Church; or to Kidney Foundation.
McNary's Chapel of Woodland is assisting the family with arrangements.
