Barry J. Winters

Barry Jonathon Winters, a former Woodland resident, died Nov. 3, 2003, in Boston. He was 23.

Born Oct. 28, 1980, to George and Paula Winters in Quartz Hill, he was raised in Southern California, then moved to Woodland in September 2003. In 1998, he graduated from Paraclete High School in Palmdale. He later served in the Peace Corps, and often participated in political campaigning for the Green Party.

He was passionate about the environment and loved children. He built computers for inner-city schools, he trained children to use computers and the Internet and he donated much of his inheritance to charities, like the World Wildlife Fund and the Avon Breast Cancer Crusade.

Described as a devoted brother and uncle, compassionate and dedicated friend and intelligent, humorous man, Winters "was a courageous, beautiful spirit finally set free from his earthly pain" by taking his own life in the city he loved, a friend said. His loved ones hope he has finally found his peace, the friend added.

He is survived by his sister Janette Winters-Hubbard of Pomona and intimate friend Holly Bishop of Davis.

In keeping with the wishes of the deceased, no services will be held.
