Born Sept. 21, 1922, in Town Herman, Wis., she grew up in the nation's heartland, the youngest daughter in a family of 13 children of William and Mary Huenemann.

When she was still a young child, Dorothea's father sold the family farm, in Garner, Iowa, and attended seminary to become a minister in the German Reformed Church. In 1946, she married a young minister, the Rev. Robert Volkert, and they served in churches in Wisconsin and Minnesota, until moving to California in 1965.

In 1979, she began working for the Office of the President of the University of California, in the Patents Department, where she focused her attention primarily on registering patents in agriculture, primarily developed at UC Davis.

After 20 years in the UC Office of the President, she and her husband retired to the University Retirement Community in Davis, where Dorothea was involved in a number of activities. She was a member of the Davis Community Church and was a patron of the arts, including the San Francisco Symphony and the UC Davis Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts.

She was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. Dr. Robert Volkert, and her grandson, Tim, son of John and Jo Volkert.

She is survived by her children and grandchildren, John, Jo and Andrew Volkert of San Carlos; James Volkert and Barbara Satterfield of Washington, D.C., and Conway, Ark.; Marci and Elisa Volkert of Fairfax, Va.; Emilie Volkert of Lansing, Mich.; Mark, Jan, Edward and Nicholas Volkert of Oakland; and Mary, Gene, Jordan and Sarah Crumley of Davis.
