Robert Bruce (Bob) Alexander, Sr.
Robert Bruce (Bob) Alexander Sr., a Davis resident since 1968, died Dec. 11, 2004. He was 81.
A celebration of his life will begin at 1 p.m. on Sunday at Howard Johnson Hotel, 4100 Chiles Blvd.
Born March 28, 1923, in Pratt, Kan., he served in the Marine Corps in World War II. In 1947, he moved to the valley with his wife, Alice and son, Robert Jr., and started his long career in the automobile business at Capitol Chevrolet. He had two more children, Gary and Peggy. After 20 years, and many moves, he came back to Davis with his second wife, Barbara, and their two daughters, Ann and Mary. In 1968 he opened Alexander Toyota.
After the sale of the dealership, he was involved in several automotive businesses. His last great venture was Rent-A-Wreck, which he ran until he retired in 2002.
He was involved with volunteer work, such as the American Cancer Society, Yolo County Mental Health, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, and Cache Creek Lodge. After 39 years of being involved with the Elks Lodge in Woodland, he was made a lifetime member.
His family says he always enjoyed a good game of golf, and managed to keep playing until a month ago, when age and a severe north wind curtailed his final round. He was described as a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 45 years, Barbara Elizabeth.
He is survived by his children, Robert Alexander Jr. of Davis, Gary Alexander of Hawaii, Peggy Alexander of Sacramento, Ann Finch of Oregon and Mary Gillis of Davis.
He is further survived by 13 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers and at the request of family, a charitable donation can be made in his name to the Alzheimer's Association, 530 Bercut Drive, Suite A, Sacramento, CA 95814, or online at www.alznorcal.org. Arrangements are under the direction of Davis Funeral Chapel.
