Joel Y. Bryan

A celebration of Joel Y. Bryan's life will take place from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Davis Art Center, 1919 F St. Bryan, a pioneer in the development of services for disabled students, died Jan. 19, 2005, from complications of pneumonia. He was 67 years old.

Bryan's family was in the Philippines when he contracted polio in 1950 at the age of 12. He became quadriplegic and used a wheelchair for the remainder of his life.

After graduating from UC Riverside in 1964, Bryan began his career in the Student Placement Center at UC Riverside. In 1969, he founded and directed the disabled students program there, before moving to Davis in 1973, where he coordinated services to handicapped students at UC Davis.

He oversaw the program's growth from a small office of two people to a comprehensive services program employing 15 regular staff and hundreds of students.

His visionary thinking continues to influence the fast-growing field of disabled student services in higher education, his family says.

Throughout his life, Bryan was part of a broader disability movement. He helped found Resources for Independent Living, and served on the statewide Task Force on Funding for Students with Disabilities and the city of Davis Handicapped Access Board of Appeals.

In 1986, he received the California Governor's Trophy for promoting employment of persons with disabilities. He is among the disability civil rights leaders interviewed for UC Berkeley's collection on the "Disability Rights and Independent Living Movement."

Bryan is survived by his wife of 35 years, Mary Jo, two sons and a grandson.

Contributions in his memory may be made to the Californians for Disability Rights and mailed to 1610 Sycamore Lane, Davis, CA 95616.
