Jane M. Ronning
Jane M. Ronning, a longtime Davis resident, died in her sleep on Monday, Feb. 28, 2005, from complications associated with Alzheimer's disease. She was 80 years old.
A memorial service celebrating her life will begin at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 12, at the Davis Funeral Chapel, 116 D St.
Born March 12, 1924, to Ben and Bess Matzke, she spent her childhood in Roundup, a small town in central Montana. After graduating from Roundup Senior High School, she continued her education at Montana State University in Bozeman. It was there that she met her future husband Magnar "Mag" Ronning. Her journey to Davis included stops in State College Pennsylvania and Stillwater Oklahoma before settling in Davis in 1958.
She enjoyed many activities. In her younger days, she was an avid golfer whose career highlight was winning the Stillwater Women's Club Championship in 1954. She was an active member of the Davis Dance Club and was a member of numerous local bridge clubs. She was a regular volunteer for the Friends of the Davis Public Library and an early supporter of the Explorit Science Center.
Her family says she delighted in the holidays, especially Christmas when she would spend weeks in her kitchen preparing elaborate cookie trays for friends and neighbors. In addition to raising her own family, she opened her home and heart to many of her husband's graduate students. Her family says she was happy to provide a warm and inviting place for students, many who were far from home.
Once her children were grown, she re-entered the workforce as a secretary. Her first secretarial experience was many years earlier as her husband's typist for his master's thesis and doctorate dissertation. She worked many years in a dean's office at UC Davis. After a brief retirement from the university, she worked for the Law Offices of Tom Frankel, where she continued to work until her final retirement.
She was preceded in death by her husband Mag, son Mikal and daughter Karen.
She is survived by her son Karl Ronning and his wife Heather of Davis; and her granddaughters, Kaity and Kristen, also of Davis.
She is further survived by her sister Alice Ann Graves of Billings, Mont.; nephews Greg Graves and his wife Claudia of Seattle; Alan Graves and his wife Mary Anna of Ballantine, Mont.; and Ben Graves and his wife Patty of Ronan, Mont.; and many friends she made through her travels, affiliation with the university, community service, work and social circles.
In lieu of flowers, a charitable donation may be offered in her name to the Explorit Science Center, P.0. Box 1288, Davis CA 95616. A virtual guest book may be signed at www.davisfuneral.com. Arrangements are under the direction of Davis Funeral Chapel.
