Nellie Ruth Lomprey

Nellie Ruth Lomprey of Davis died peacefully in her sleep on Saturday, Feb. 5, 2005. Born Jan. 25, 1915, in Staten Island, N.Y., she was 90 years old.

A memorial service will begin at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 26, at the Episcopal Church of St. Martin, 640 Hawthorn Lane in Davis.

She moved to California at age 13 with her family and went on to attend UC Berkeley, earning her bachelor of arts degree in 1938 and a master's degree in public health in 1951. She had an active career in public health education, working 29 years in federal, state and local agencies in California, Alaska and Washington, D.C. She retired in 1979.

In 1994, she moved from Berkeley to Davis, where she became active in many community organizations, including the Episcopal Church of St. Martin, International House, the Davis Senior Center and the University Retirement Community, where she lived for the past five years. She was surrounded by family, friends and caring hospice and URC nurses as her life drew to a close, family members said.

Her hobbies included a fascination with gems and minerals, which prompted an interest in "rock-hounding," jewelry making and exhibiting fluorite specimens. She also took classes in geology, silver casting and lapidary, and collected art, Alaskan ivory and Canadian soapstone carvings. Family members said Lomprey's life also was filled with a faith in God, meaningful purpose, generosity and a great love for family and friends.

She is survived by a large, extended family, including three sisters: Edith Kanoff of Davis, Margaret Moruza of Berkeley and Mary Bush of Chico.
