Shirlie McKeen
Shirlie McKeen of Eugene, Ore., died Jan. 26, 2005, from complications following surgery. She was in the company of family and friends at the time of her death at age 63.
A memorial service will begin at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 20, at the Campbell Senior Center, 155 High St., in Eugene
Born March 28, 1941, in Sacramento to Dorothy and Lowell Myler, she went to school first in Gustine, and later in Davis and Sacramento. She was part of the last class to graduate from the old Davis High School in 1959.
She started her undergraduate studies at UC Santa Barbara and finished at UC Davis. She then went to work for Sacramento County as a case worker and later supervisor for general assistance. She married Bob Valine and had her only child, Jardin, in 1965. She went back to school in the late 70s, receiving her master of social work in 1980. She continued her education, becoming a licensed clinical social worker in 1983. She moved to Carmel Valley and continued social work and counseling. It was there she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and retired. She then moved to Fort Bragg to be closer to friends and family, and to assist her mother, Dorothy, until her mother's death in 1999. She then moved to Eugene.
Her family said she had a lifelong interest in gardening given to her by her father. She had beautiful gardens and was a volunteer at the Fort Bragg Botanical Gardens. She also had a love for antiques and was a co-owner of a small antique store in Sacramento in the 1970s. An avid photographer, she created a line of greeting cards to display her landscapes and flowers. In her final years, she took up the study of Spanish in Eugene and Mexico, hoping to become a bilingual volunteer.
Her family said she had many friends, including good friends Bill Wilson and Dr. Bob Smith.
She was preceded in death by her brothers, Billy Angers and John Myler.
She is survived by her son Jardin Valine and his wife Hannah of Southern Oregon; her brothers, Tom Myler of Washington, Steve Myler and his wife Sandy of Davis, Mike Myler and his wife Anne of Davis; sister Pat Bulthuis and her husband Keith of Gallup, N.M.; grandson Jasper Lovewirth of Southern Oregon; and her former husband, Bob Valine of Southern Oregon.
She is further survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Remembrances may be made to Strings of Compassion, Sacred Heart Medical Center Foundation, P.O. Box 10905, Eugene, OR 97440, or to the organization of the donor's choice.
