$300 OR 300 DAYS IN JAIL
Winters Prize-Fight Promoter, The Two Pugilists and Several Others Taught A
Lesson.
WOODLAND (Yolo Co.), July 6 - While serving a 300-day sentence in the County
Jail, Edward SPRAGUE may be able to evolve some scheme that will prove a
more certain money-maker than engineering a prize fight in a county where
the District Attorney looks after the rigid enforcement of the law. Sprague
was the promoter of the prize fight that ended in such an unexpected manner
at Winters on Monday evening.
During the Fourth of July he had time to think things over, and when he
appeared before Justice of the Peace LAMPTON yesterday afternoon he pleaded
guilty to the complaint making the offense a misdemeanor. He was promptly
sentenced to pay a fine of $300 or serve time at the rate of $1 per day. As
he was without funds a commitment was issued.
Sprague claims to be an ex-policeman of Oakland and says that he will be
able to raise the money to pay his fine.
Joseph PERRY and James ERVIN, the principals in the affair, were each
fined $150. Sentence was suspended on the agreement of the men to leave the
county, never to return, and on the further understanding that they would
keep Deputy Sheriff BROWN posted each week as to their movements.
Frank HAYES, doorkeeper, and Larry COUSINS, referee, were sentenced to pay
a fine of $50 each, but sentence was suspended during good behavior. Edward
CULLEN, a 17-year-old boy, who was arrested with the others, was let off
with some sound advice from Judge LAMPTON.
Harry L HUSTON, District Attorney, is well pleased with the outcome and
ventures the opinion that Yolo County will not be treated to any "boxing
contests" in the near future.
HEAT CLAIMS AGED WOMAN FOR VICTIM
WOODLAND (Yolo Co.), July 6 - Hot weather has claimed one victim in the
person of Mrs. Charles THOMPSON, of Yolo.
Mrs. Thompson was at work in an orchard Tuesday afternoon when she was
taken with a sudden weakness and had to be assisted into the house. Medical
aid was summoned from Woodland, but it was impossible to save her life and
she died yesterday morning.
Deceased had long suffered from a weak heart and was therefore unable to
endure the intense heat of Tuesday.
