I could not find a cemetery specifically called Oak Lawn Cemetery. =
There may
be some at churches. I only checked the internet. I tried
Yahoo-Metro-Chicago and then go to suburbs.
Lincoln Park is now a park in Chicago. Many years ago I think some =
people
were buried there but moved later. It's now a zoo and park.
I have a phone directory for Chicago Suburbs. When I checked for a
Oak Lawn Cemetery I had the same result - zip or nothing.
As for Lincoln Park, this was an early cemetery. When Chicago spread
north across the river in the late 1800's graves and new land was needed =
for
contruction the people buried in what is now Lincoln Park were dug up =
and
moved to other cemeteries. Rumor has it that not all of the graves were =
moved
for the simple fact that not all were known are no tombstones marked =
their
location. The cemetery begin approximately at North Avenue (runs east to
west) and Clark Street (runs south to north). The Chicago Historical =
Society
was built on part of the old cemetery. The ONLY known remaining burial =
in Lincoln Park is that of the COUCH family who are buried in a =
beautiful stone=20
mausoleum. Their name is inscribed above the mausoleum door and is =
located
directly to the north of the Chicago Historical Society.
Many old cemeteries were moved in the middle to late 1800's in Chicago =
and suburbs. The intersection of 107th and Michigan Ave. is
the site of an old cemetery. Most of the bodies were removed and buried =
in=20
other locations but some are still buried there. Some years back a road =
or sewer gang were digging up the street and discovered an old cast iron =
casket.
It was laid aside until the work was completed after which it was =
returned to the
hole and covered up. The story is that when the small swingin panel on =
top of
the casket was moved aside the face of a perfectly preserved young woman =
could be seen.
At the corner of 127th Street and the now elevated Illinois Central RR
tracks is an Indian burial ground. When the river was widened ago the =
south portion of the cemetery was removed and used for land fill =
material but a considerable portion of the old cemetery lies under the =
road running adjacent
to the tracks to the north of 127th Street.=20
Listed below are but a small portion of the many cemeteries in and =
