Very interesting question...I can offer a little information. While
lids were often nailed on earlier coffins, in the latter part of the
period you specify, screws were used on some, and those were large ones
which were made of brass as often as steel. Some of the coffins of this
vintage I have seen in museums (yes, there are a few), also have metal
plaques on the lid, to be engraved with the name and dates of the life
of the deceased. These were generally commercially manufactured coffins
from nearer the end of the era. --Gary in Raytown, Missouri
