Subject: Photographing stones - an odd problem
Date: Sun, 13 Jul 1997 11:09:51 EDT
My son has gotten approval to photograph, document and publish an old
cemetery in town for his Boy Scout Eagle Project.
There is a small problem with one of the markers that we need some
assistance with.
There is a monument with an engraved marble stone, set back deep in the
face of the monument so that it does not get the usual weathering, high
enough so that the dirt does not splash on it, and remote enough that no
one has defaced it. It is as clean and white after over 100 years as it
was the day it was engraved. This makes it almost impossible to
photograph for publication. Is there a material that can be rubbed into
the letters that will make them stand out, yet washable and not harmful
to the stone?? I realize that he can photograph a rubbing.
Any suggestions?
He will also be seeking permission to set up a temporary webpage to
distribute the information recovered. I will let you know if it comes au
and where to find it.
Thanks,
Ted FLOORE
