Applying anything to a tombstone may cause trouble. One way to read
very faint markings is to bring a medium sized mirror and by then
reflecting sunlight at a very sharp angle almost at 90 degrees to the
service of the stone the image may appear. I picked this up from a
special dealing with Greek temples. One of there last temples that was
not completed, within the last few years found the original plans for
that temple scribed tens of centries ago on its unfinished white marble
stone. It was only visable when they used mirros to reflect the
sunlight. The bright sunlight produces shadows which are easily
photographed or seen. If you are looking at this, you may want to wear
sunglasses just for your eye comfort. If you have to apply something,
try to get powdered stone that matches the stone you are working with.
That material will be chemicaly the same as the stone and should have no
effect on it. Try one of the stone yards that produces monuments
today.
