The markers are also called "Table Stones" or sometimes "Table
Tombs". They are simply a Tablet marker with legs. They were
not uncommon throughout the mid-Atlantic and Northeast areas in
the 18th and 19th centuries. They aren't real common, though, I
assume because of their relative expense when compared to a
flat or upright stone.

As to their use as picnic tables, I can't comment, but its
possible.

Bosed on my own unscientific observations, the flat stones do
appear to erode somewhat faster than upright ones. Possibly
because the watter pools on the surface? Has anyone else ever
paid attention to this?
