Subject: [CEMETERY-L] RATHDRUM, IDAHO: Cemetery history revived as Lions build parking lot -- Site may be over Chinese graves
Date: Wed, 21 Jul 1999 15:56:09 -0400
RATHDRUM, Idaho: The Rathdrum Lions Club in northern Idaho denies that its
new parking lot was built on top of the graves of 15-20 Chinese railroad
workers from the late 1800s.
The Lions Club contends the graves were moved from the lot years ago. Lions
Club president Bob McComb said, "No one would put a parking lot over
graves."
Apparently, there is a major difference of opinion as to the whereabouts of
these graves. Some, such as the Lions Club, believe the graves were moved
years ago to Pinegrove Cemetery. Others, such as Mayor Tawnda Bromley,
believe the graves were moved years ago FROM Pinegrove Cemetery to the lot
across the street, now the Lions Club parking lot. And then there are
those, such as Beverly Young, secretary-treasurer of the Westwood Historical
Society, who believes they may be buried in the right-of-way of state
Highway 53, which runs through Rathdrum.
