NEW GASCONY, ARKANSAS -- St. Peter's Cemetery near Pine Bluff is now on the
National Register of Historic Places and will be dedicated at 3:30 p.m. on
Sunday, Nov. 7. Two time capsules will be buried -- one to be opened in 25
years, the other in 50 years.
The first recorded burial here was in 1827; the most recent in 1927.
Before restoration, weeds had grown thigh-high, vines choked the pecan
trees, the tombstones had been broken by tractors and bush hogs. At one
time a farmer, without the permission of the church, used the fenced-in area
to pen his hogs.
