Hello All,
I have been maintaining a once abandoned family cemetery for three years
now. It had been overcome with briars, poison ivy, pampass grass and
locust sprouts. A new fence, gates and a sign with a display case were
installed. Photographs of those buried in the cemetery are placed in the
case for visitors to see. Pamphlets detailing the cemetery history are
also provided.
I want to go a few steps forward and make a to scale map of the cemetery
and all the graves. I was wondering if anyone has accomplished this task
and could detail their technique. I am planning to survey it with a
transit, measure the distances with a tape measure and then plot it
using PC software. Does anyone recommend a specific software package?
Eventually, I would like to make a software 3-D model of the cemetery
and link photographs of the graves and stones to the plot. This way a
person could take a virtual tour of the cemetery and click on any graves
of interest for a photograph and detailed text about the person buried
there.
After completing the map project, I plan to make a book about the
cemetery to offer as an incentive for maintenance donations. I have been
collecting photographs, family genealogical information, death
certificates, etc. of all those buried in the cemetery. Several unmarked
graves have been identified with the help of several old-timers of the
area.
I have also entertained the idea of making a video of the cemetery. The
footage has already been shot, but the editing phase is yet to come.
Preserving the specifics of a cemetery in all available media formats
would almost insure that the information would survive.
Any help or ideas regarding the above projects would be greatly
appreciated.
