Flour works well and will not harm the stone. It amazes me the attitude some people have. What gives someone the right to destroy someone elses stone all in the name of geneaology.

I'm a new observer to the list, and genealogy is my twist. I LOVE
cemeteries and the history that they contain. I joined the list to
hopefully pick up some tips and tidbits along the path to finding and
identifying my ancestors.
I've been following the "shaving cream" discussion and I can see that there
are good arguments to use or not to use. HOWEVER, if anybody's counting
votes, and with scientific argument behind it, I lean more toward
preservation. With THAT in mind, surely, SURELY, there are other natural
and/or harmless alternative applications. If the experts know what should
not be used, what say the experts about options BESIDES only rubbings? Dare
I suggest something like--gasp!--whipped cream? Now, THAT has all SORTS of
possibilities...
As newbie, I realize the risk I take at attempting to interject some humor
into this serious subject, so please forgive me if it is not your sort of
humor.
With best regards and intentions,
Gayle Cantrell

lol, but.......we are in to genealogy to preserve the history of families
FIRST and foremost. If the only record is a tombstone and the only way to
read it is shaving cream, than by all means save the history, the stone will
eventually go its own way anyway....and than the opportunity is lost
forever.....and that would be a terrible shame. Those who do not believe in
using shaving cream as a last measure are throwing out the baby with the
bathwater.
