Yes, and many of the varieties of grass and other foliage that are adjacent
to, or along the perimeter of the cemeteries and churchyards are also
protected by law. So on any trip to see a tombstone, you should be
accompanied by a government-accredited botanist who specializes in these
sorts of things to make sure it is legal for you to exit your automobile
once you get there.

Warning for any family historians in the UK or visiting the UK.
Many of the various lichens and mosses etc. that grown on tombstones are
protected by law as rare species.
Please do not remove any without first checking what they are.
It may be that you view the lichens as disfiguring but they are part of
what makes the UK churchyards what they are.
