Just interjecting a few words here....
The amount of decomposition that will have occurred to the human remains in
any given cemetery is highly dependent upon not only the age of the remains
but on the soil content. Soil with a high acidity tends to promote
decomposition. Conversely, soils such as found in desert areas where the
climate is fairly arid tend to promote lesser decomposition of remaining
skeletal remains. The above ground bones of cattle and other animals that
died along the route of the overland prairie to California were still being
found almost a hundred years after the route was used.
Every cemetery and its conditions are different, though those within the same
vicinity may be presumed to be much similar to each other.

The remains have been there over 150 years, which means there's little or
nothing left ~ even bones. Will it work then?

Today you take two metal coat hangers. Cut them so you have an L shape. Go
to a grave yard close to your home. Hold your hangers in the 3 and 9
position of the clock in front of you in closed fists with the long ends
pointing out much like you would a steering wheel. Then walk over a row of
graves. You will notice that the rods will cross at every grave. This is a
very good way to find unmarked graves.
