Gloria Osborne asks about family vault design and Steven Elkins mentions
that similar types are found in Savannah, Charleston, and elsewhere. I am
familiar with no one (regrettably) who has explored and published on
this important topic. Most of the information is anecdotal. We at Chicora
have, however, examined the construction of several vaults in Colonial
Cemetery (Savannah) rather extensively and our work is published and widely
available through interlibrary loan. The reference for the publication
(which includes many photos and a very preliminary and perhaps naïve effort
to classify the types present at Colonial) is:
Trinkley, Michael and Debi Hacker 1999 An Archaeological Examination
of Four Family Tombs at Colonial Cemetery, Savannah, Georgia. Research
Series 58. Chicora Foundation, Inc., Columbia.
Perhaps this will be of interest to Ms. Osborne.
