I have been pressure washing stones for several years with great results. As with any activity some fore knowledge of the material you are working with is essential. Hard polished granites are extremely durable and are beautifully cleaned with a pressure washer. Softer stones, we mainly have white and grey marble up to 125 years old, are much more prone to damage if you are too agressive with your cleaning techniques. Wide spray patterns, and holding the tip at least 6-12 inches away from the memorial work well. Working slowly and testing each stone first with a stiff bristle brush should indicate if what you are trying to remove can be removed without damaging the stone. Most of what we work with is lichens and mosses that grow on the stone in our wet marine environment. A very diluted bleach/water solution works well to delay the re-growth. Most of what we clean is 50 years or more of growth.
