Subject: [CENSUS-CHAT] Will do lookups: NY Aliens 1825-1848
Date: Sat, 26 Feb 2000 17:51:42 -0800

Hello,
Just received a book entitled "New York Alien Residents,
1825-1848" by Kenneth Scott and Rosanne Conway, 1978
(reprinted 1998) and would like to offer to do lookups for
anyone who asks nicely and gives full names and dates!
Due to NY Legislature's Act of 1825, all
aliens were required to file a deposition for fifty
cents that stated they were residents and "intend
always to reside in the United States and to become
a citizen thereof as soon as he can be
naturalized", etc. If not naturalized after 6
years, "his lands should be vested in the people of
New York."
The original depositions (54 volumes) reside in the
New York State Library in Albany and are said to
contain a wealth of information. The book I have
(1825-1848) indexes the first 4 volumes only. It doesn't
appear as though the other 50 volumes have been indexed.
I must warn you that, though my ggg-grandfather Alexander
McDonald is known to have emigrated from Perthshire, Scotland
in 1832 to NY and was apprenticed to his uncle Dr. Archibald
Cameron for at least 2 years, he does not appear in this
index. He moved to KY after those 2 yrs in NY so perhaps he
didn't feel the need to register. In other words, not all
aliens paid their 50 cents and there are no guarantees your
ancestors will be here either! I'm willing to take a look
though! ;-)

Regards,
Terri McDonald Hauk
