To whom it may concern,
I am applying for dual citizenship with Italy. I have done searches through
uscis, nara, Ontario county ny and seneca county ny that show no record of
my grandfather, Thomas Gillotte, originally written Tomasso Gigliotti, born
1/1897 in Adam, Decollatura, Catanzaro, Calabria Italy. He lived in Geneva
NY, which is in Ontario county NY until his death in 5/1991. All have been
unable to find any records of a naturalization application, which is
beneficial to my cause. The problem is that the 1925 census has a box that
asks if the person is a citizen, and it is checked yes. The Italian
consulate has asked me to try and clarify if this was just a case of the
person being asked if they are a citizen and could then just answer yes/no
as there was no real verification, or if perhaps, the census has some
records if naturalization, and proof would have been required. Now, of
course the problem is that this all took place 85 years ago, but my question
is; is there any records of the procedures that existed 85 years ago that
could clarify whether the person in question could just respond as they
pleased, or would some document have been required to claim citizenship on
the census, or is there no real way to know, and can I obtain some sort of
letter from the census that I could present to the Italian consulate. I know
that was a long request, and I thank you in advance for any help you can
give me.
