Descendants of Richard Massey, Sr.
(With details on sons William and Hezekiah)

Theron L, Smith 29 May 2000

Generation No. 1
1. RICHARD (2) MASSEY, SR. was born Abt. 1696 in Bristol Parish,
Virginia1, and died June 05, 1740 in Brunswick/Greensville County,
Virginia. He married ANNE PETTIPOOL Abt. 1715 in Prince George
County, Virginia1. She was born Abt. 1693 in of, Prince George,
Virginia, and died October 22, 1770 in Brunswick, Virginia.
Notes for RICHARD MASSEY, SR.:
Richard Massey is the earliest known ancestor of this branch of the
Massey family. Judge Massey showed this Richard with a father, John,
and a grandfather, John, but neither of these connections can be
verified.

Children of RICHARD MASSEY and ANNE PETTIPOOL are:
i. MARTHA MASSEY, m. WILLIAM MOORE; b. WFT Est. 1701-
1721; d. WFT Est. 1746-1807.

x. TABITHA MASSEY, b. January 08, 1729/30, Bristol,
Prince George, VA1; d. Aft. May 08, 17701.

Generation No. 2
2. WILLIAM (3) MASSEY (RICHARD(2)) was born 1715 in Virginia, and died
Aft. 1782 in Wake County, North Carolina. He married JUDITH Abt.
1741.

Children of WILLIAM MASSEY and JUDITH are:
i. PETTIPOOL MASSEY, b. Abt. 1743, Brunswick Co., VA;
d. 1794, Franklin Co., NC1; m. (1) CELIA HODGES; m. (2) SELAH, Abt.
17601; b. Abt. 1745. Notes for PETTIPOOL MASSEY:
Pettipool and Selah appear to have had as many as 12 children:
Pettipool Jr. (died young), Nathan, Warren, Eli, Avis, Sarah, Lydia,
Lucy, Asa, Selah, Elizabeth, and Zilpah.
ii. ELIZABETH MASSEY, b. Abt. 1745; m. ----- BROADWAY.
iii. REUBEN MASSEY, b. Abt. 1747.
Judge Massey says b. 1755-1760.
iv. SEABORN MASSEY, b. Abt. 1749.
Judge Massey says born abt. 1755.
v. WARREN MASSEY, b. Abt. 1750; d. Aft. 1800,
Greenville Co., SC; reported to be in Laurens County, SC; 1800, On
census in Greenville County, South Carolina
vi. FREDERICK MASSEY, b. July 24, 1750.
Frederick and Hezekiah Massey Jr the Older have traditionally been
placed as sons of Hezekiah(2)'s brother. William (2) Massey and
Judith. Recently, I have become convinced that these two are
probably brothers and sons of Hezekiah(2) and Sarah. (See notes
under Hezekiah and Sarah below)
vii. THOMAS MASSEY, b. Abt. 1751.
Judge Massey says son BY HYPOTHESIS.
viii. NOEL MASSEY, b. Abt. 1755; d. 1834, Anderson County,
SC; m. LUCINDA.More: Bef. 1790, Moved from Johnston Co., NC to
Pendleton Dist., SC.
ix. HEZEKIAH (4) MASSEY II, b. Abt. 1757; m. NANCY -----.
Notes for HEZEKIAH MASSEY II: Hezekiah (4) Massey Jr the Older and
Frederick have traditionally been placed as sons of Hezekiah(2)'s
brother. William (2) Massey and Judith. Recently, I have become
convinced that these two are probably brothers and sons of
Hezekiah(2) and Sarah. (See notes under Hezekiah(2) and Sarah below)

x. BRITTAIN MASSEY, b. Bet. 1760 - 1765.
Judge Massey says son BY HYPOTHESIS.
xi. WILLIAM MASSEY, JR, b. Abt. 1760; m. DELPHIA
BROADWAY. Judge Massey says son BY HYPOTHESIS and b. abt. 1765.
----------
NOTE: Henry and the Richard following him were placed by Judge
Massey as being grandson and son, resp., of Richard (2) Massey
[son of Hezekiah (1) and Elizabeth] and Susannah -----. These two
Masseys and the ones following them in this list are part of the
group who settled on the current boundary between Wake and Durham
(then Orange Co.) in the Sycamore and Lick Creek area. Although
there is good reason to think Judge Massey had these placed
incorrectly, there is no known justification for placing them with
William and Judith of Wake Co., NC.
xii. HENRY MASSEY, b. Abt. 17551; d. Abt. 1832, Wilson
Co., TN1; m. REBECCA BLAKE. As already seen, other (also
questionable) accounts make this Henry son rather than brother of
Richard (3) Massey Jr just below who 1m. Dorothy ---- and who 2m.
Judith Brasfield
xiii. RICHARD MASSEY, b. Abt. 1765, Brunswick, Virginia1;
d. March 23, 1807, Wake, North Carolina, (WD)1; m. (1) DOROTHY, WFT
Est. 1772-17991; b. WFT Est. 1730-17521; d. WFT Est. 1773-1840; m.
(2) JUDITH BRASFIELD, June 05, 1797; b. WFT Est. 1739-1779; d. WFT
Est. 1801-1867. Judge Massey shows the brother of Henry who m.
Rebacca Blake as Richard iii, b. abt. 1770, who 1m. Penelope Blake
and 2m. Patsey Blake. It was this Richard that Judge Massey
claimed as his ancestor.
xiv. ISIACH MASSEY, b. WFT Est. 1765; d. WFT Est. 1743-
1844. [I have no idea who this Isiach (Isaac or Isaiah?) was
supposed to be. Some of the questionable entries of children of
William and Judith show Dempsey Massey in place of Isiach. Judge
Massey showed Dempsey as another son of the Richard who 1m.
Dorothy.
xv. JOHN MASSEY, b. WFT Est. 1765; d. WFT Est. 1743-
1844. [This John is presumably one of the Judge Massey's Johns -
either a son or brother of the Richard who 1m. Dorothy ----.]
xvi. SAMUEL MASSEY, b. WFT Est. 1765; d. WFT Est. 1743-
1844. [This Samuel is presumably the same person that Judge Massey
made son of Richard who 1m. Dorothy.]

3. HEZEKIAH (3) MASSEY, SR. (RICHARD(2)) was born Abt. 1718, and died
1791 in Franklin County, North Carolina. He married (1) SARAH Abt.
1749. She was born 1, and died Abt. 1775. He married (2) MARTHA
Aft. 1777 in Wake Co., NC. She was born Abt. 1757.

Children of HEZEKIAH (3) MASSEY and SARAH are:
i. FREDERICK MASSEY, b. July 24, 1750; d. June 08,
1809, prob. Wake Co., NC; m. MATILDA "MILLIE" CHAMBLEE, Abt. 1773;
b. April 27, 1751. [Frederick (4) and Hezekiah (4)Massey Jr the Older have
traditionally been placed as sons of Hezekiah(2)'s brother. William
(2) Massey and Judith. Recently, I have become convinced that
these two are probably brothers and sons of Hezekiah(2) and Sarah.
(See notes under Hezekiah (3) below)] Children of Frederick and Millie
are: Thomas, Winney, Jephthah, Charlotte, Holland or Helen,
Frederick Jr. ("Reddick"), Isaac, and Azel. [Judge Massey assigned
another younger son, Craton.]
ii. RICHARD (4) MASSEY, b. Abt. 1752, Brunswick County,
Virginia; d. June 1815, Franklin County, North Carolina; m. (1)
<UNKNOWN>, Abt. 1770, Wake Co., NC; m. (2) SARAH VALENTINE, Abt.
1810. Richard left an 1815 will in Franklin Co., NC. and, the names
of his children are well known: Chloe, Henry, Sampson. Isham, Abel,
Barachias, Sarah, Mary, Simeon, and Dorcas. The fact that all the
children's names except Henry were of Biblical origin have led to
speculation that his first wife may have been of Quaker origin.
Also noted is that no wife joined the Poplar Springs Baptist Chuch
in 1788 when Richard became a charter member. Barachias Massey was
ancestor of the present compiler.
iii. ABEL MASSEY, ?, b. Abt. 1755.
[Placement of Abel Massey of Patrick Co., VA was a HYPOTHESIS of
Judge Frank Massey and I haven't seen it anywhere else.]
iv. HEZEKIAH (4) MASSEY, JR, THE OLDER, b. Abt. 1757; d.
Bet. 1826 - 1827, Wake Co., NC near Wakefield; m. NANCY, Abt. 1778,
Wake Co., NC.
Notes for HEZEKIAH (4) MASSEY, JR, THE OLDER:
Hezekiah (4)'s Wake Co. will is dated 11 Dec 1826.Children were:
Lavina, Ailey, Hezekiah (5), Winney, Nancy>, Elijah, Elizabeth, James,
Zana.
Hezekiah (4) Massey Jr the Older and Frederick (4) have traditionally
been placed as sons of Hezekiah(3)'s brother. William (3) Massey and
Judith.
Recently, I have become convinced that these two are probably
brothers and sons of Hezekiah(3) and Sarah. This Hezekiah (4) is
called Hezekiah Jr. in an 1782/3 Wake Co., Tax List and his entry
is near that of Frederick Smith and James Butler. In the field
notes of the 11 Nov 1779 survey this Hezekiah's Wake Co. [later
Franklin Co.] grant, his land is said to join the lines of William (3)
Massey [on southeast], Pettypool (4) Massey [on north], and Hezekiah (4)
Massey Sr. [on northeast] On 10 Nov 1779, the land just south of
Hezekiah(4)'s new grant had been surveyed for Richard (4)Massey.
In 1792, this Hezekiah(4), whose plantation was in Wake Co., near
Wakefield, NC, split his Franklin Co. grant between (a)Pettipool [on
the north], son of William(3) and (b) Richard (4)[on the south] , son of
Hezekiah(3).
Recent research has indicated a close affinity between the families
of this Hezekiah (4) and Frederick (4).
For a long time, I refrained from placing the current Hezekiah (4)as
son of Hezekiah (3) solely because the latter named a "young" son
Hezekiah (4) in his 1791 will. However, two different mothers were
involved, and it is not uncommon for a man of this time period to
have two sons named after him if they have different mothers and
are not close to each other in age.,
It appears that earlier researchers assigned too many sons to
William(3), but my latest placement does need further study.
v. ELIZABETH MASSEY, b. Abt. 1761; m. JAMES BUTLER.
vi. SARAH "SOOKY" MASSEY, b. Abt. 1761; m. <UNKNOWN>
UPCHURCH.
vii. SUSAN MASSEY, b0. Abt. 1764; m. WILLIAN BUNN.
viii. CATHERINE MASSEY, b. August 06, 1767; d. July 08,
1825, Wake Co., NC; m. BENJAMIN BUNN, JR., 1784, Wake Co., NC.

Children of HEZEKIAH (3) MASSEY and MARTHA are:
ix. HEZEKIAH3 (4) MASSEY, JR, THE YOUNGER, b. Abt. 1780; d.
Aft. 1840, Iredell County, North Carolina.
Notes for HEZEKIAH (4) MASSEY, JR, THE YOUNGER:
This Hezekiah was one of the "young children" named in Hezekiah(3) Sr's
1791 Franklin Co. will. Present compiler believes Hezekiah (3) son
of Richard (2) Massey and Anne Pettipool probably had two sons
named Hezekiah (4)- one by each of his wives. The older one who m.
Nancy ----- and had 1826 will in Wake Co., NC was called
Hezekiah (4) Jr and already had about 7 children in 1791. See facts
below about THIS Hezekiah's going to Iredell Co., NC. I have seen no
confimation of the one in Iredell being the current Hezekiah (4).
The one in Iredell Co. is said to have m. Nancy Lathery.
Fact 1: 1810, On census in Chatham County, North Carolina
Fact 2: 1820, On census in Iredell County, North Carolina
Fact 3: 1840, On census in Iredell County, North Carolina
x. BURGESS MASSEY, b. Abt. 1778; d. Bef. 1817; m. MARY
"POLLY".
xi. JOSEPH MASSEY, b. Abt. 1786; d. Aft. 1791.
xii. JOHN MASSEY, b. Abt. 1784; d. Aft. 1791.
xiii. CHARITY MASSEY, b. Abt. 1782.
xiv. LYDIA MASSEY, b. Abt. 1788.
