My gr.gr.grandparents were married at the Parish Church, St. Peter Port,
Guernsey, so my husband and I decided to visit this island in 1992. We booked
all flights ourselves through the airlines, from Philadelphia to London, then
right out on another airline to Guernsey. The flights were great, and we had
the best of weather, only bright sunshine.
My great grandmother, Maria Carruthers, daughter of Maj. John Carruthers and
Margaret Bourke, had traveled from Dublin to Guernsey with her mother, to live
with her mother's sister and husband, Jane Bourke De Carteret and George De
Carteret, when her father died in Ireland circa 1800. Maria and my gr.
grandfather, Capt. Humphrey John Tench, were married in the parish church in
St. Peter Port on 1 Nov 1805; I suppose they were sweethearts back in Ireland,
as the Tench's were from Wexford.
My husband and I were enchanted with Guernsey, took a boat trip to Herm, and
spent a gorgeous day walking around this beautiful island, and having a picnic
lunch on the hillside with French cheese and bread, and a bottle of French
wine which we brought from St. P.P. We thought we were in (heaven) Bermuda,
the water was so blue, and the air so clear.
After visiting the Priaulx Library, and later a cemetery in the town, we
found out a few tidbits about the De Carteret's chilren . And this about
Jane: "Jane Bourke, femme de George De Carteret Esq, a ete enterrie le ll.
Decembre 1845, a l'age of 81 Ans." I have been hoping to find out more about
Jane, as I have been unsuccessful in locating anything about her family in
Ireland.
When we visited the Parish Church in St. Peter Port, there was a plaque on
the side of the church honoring Sir Isaac Brock. How ironic that my
gr.gr.grandparents retired to Queenston, Ontario, Canada, and according to
family records, supplied the stone (from quarries on their farm) for the
present monument to Brock. He was killed in the battle of Queenston, but won
the battle!
Can anyone locate any connection between the George DeCarteret in my story,
and the DeCarteret's mentioned on this site? Could George have been in the
military, gone to Ireland, and married Jane? Thanks from Lancaster,
Pennsylavania, Margaret Crothers .
