Alex,
Many thanks for the info as to how I might trace Caroline B? who lived at
Gurnsey from the age of 2. And later married John Cook. As for your P.S.
that also is a good idea. We did check out Caroline's death certificate.
She married again, and was widowed again - in later life. She died in a NSW
Country town. Sadly there seems to have been no members of her family with
her at the time of her death and information was given by someone who worked
at the hospital. We got only her age, medical opinion as to cause of death,
(T.B.) in modern terms. The word unknown was written on other sections of
the certificate. When the informant has the knowledge, Australian death
certificates can be very detailed. It was disappointing to see Caroline's
certificate. On certificates of some of her children they have stated that
her maiden name was O'Brien. However, this is open to question. Did that
branch of the family really know, or did one follow the other's educated
guess as to mother's maiden surname? Descendants of thatbranch (from
Caroline's second marriage) are suspicious as to the accuracy of the name
O'Brien. I will keep an open mind on the subject.
Regards,
Betty
