Hi Roger et al,
Spent a couple of hours at the library today - but unfortunately didn't
achieve an awful lot!!
Births for DE CARTERET
1859-1866 - None.
Looks like Jean de Carteret and Rachel Le Gros did not have any further
children after their arrival in NZ (unless they are unregistered?).
Checked Mges from 1867 to 1882
ANN RACHEL DE CARTERET md 1871 (ref 1442) to ADAM R. BARCLAY.
SAMUEL JOHN DE CARTERET md 1875 (ref 2400) to LUCILLE JANE BURNS
STEPHEN PHILIP DE CARTERET md 1882 (ref 940)
Unfortunately our BDM records give the marriage year/ref - but do not
give the spouse! Unless you know her surname it is impossible to match
them up.
Need to search of the marriage record to find this detail.
MATILDA DE CARTERET md 1894 (ref 75) - that's a new name!!
CLAUD TESTA DE CARTERET md 1910 (ref 6238)
All mges checked from 1895 - 1920.
BIRTHS - De Carteret (it is spelt with a capital 'D'!)
JOHN HERBERT DE CARTERET - born 1876 (ref 2974), Auckland District
ANNIE CHARLOTTE DE CARTERET - born 1879 (ref 3281), Drury District
(Auckland)
CLAUD TESTA DE CARTERET - born 1883 (ref 3452), Drury District
SAMUEL LAWRENCE DE CARTERET - born 1885 (ref 3558), Drury District
Again searches of the birth entries need to be down to confirm
parents...
Checked births up until 1892.
Surprisingly I could not find a marriage for John Herbert DE CARTERET -
is it possible that he didn't marry in NZ?
Back to BARCLAY births (children of Ann Rachel De C and Adam Barclay)
There is a RACHEL GORDON BARCLAY born 1872 (ref 207)
WILLIAM JOHN born 1874 (ref 540)
WILLIAM JAMES born 1876 (ref 2454) - not sure which is the right one -
can check region of birth to see if it helps.
STEPHEN BARCLAY born 1877 (ref 2137)
I checked the 1885/6 Wises Directory
DE CARTERET, Stephen, Farmer, Papakura
DE CARTEUT (sic), John, Farmer, Ellerslie (both Auckland region)
1889 Auckland Director
W. DE CARTERET, Ellerslie
While these Directories give little information it does help establish
were they were living in particular years.
If only our records were as easy as the CI records!!!
DEATHS - can confirm that JEAN died in 1899 and Rachel died in 1901 (you
had full date anyway) - both in Auckland.
Checked out the cemetery listings for a cemetery in Manurewa -
surprisingly couldn't find one - there are quite a number of cemeteries
in this region of Auckland - probably the easiest (or laziest!) way to
try to find the details is to search the death entry. It should tell
you where she was buried and perhaps the tombstone may offer something
we don't already know about the family.
I know this doesn't tell you much more than you already know... but it
gives me some information to work on.
All the best
Pam
