A helpful hint to all of those (like myself) who occasionally need
translations from French (or Spanish, or German, or Italian....).
Altavista has a translation site www.babelfish.altavista.com which seems
to do an adequate job of translating between languages. (For those who
are curious: a Babelfish is what the main character in "A Hitchiker's
Guide to the Galaxy" placed in his ear, allowing him to understand what
was spoken by non-english speaking characters.)

The results of using Babelfish for the requested translation are
slightly different than what Victor posted, although the overall meaning
comes through. This should help figure out what was said until a
"proper" translation can be obtained.

Babelfish Results:
"Died, Friday the 16 of the current, and in the residence of Mrs. Burke,
his daughter, Mrs. Messervy, widow of fire Capt. France Messervy, of the
Royal Navy, and Niece of fire Nicolas Messervy, Ecr., of alive sound
Lieut. Bailly of this Island. The Loss of this sizeable Dame, which was
68 years agee, is the object of the pain of its inconsolable family, and
of the regrets of all lex people which had the advantage of the
connaltre. Its remainders mortals out ete deposes aupres of those of
his/her husband, in the Cemetery of the parish of St Saver. "
