I was recently given as a Christmas present a photocopy of Gardner's 1787
Map of Guernsey. (it appears to show virtually every field at about 8
inches to the mile). It is about 4 foot wide by 2 foot high - twice! I
have had it encapsulated so that it is back and front of a stiff card and
hopefully I can use it like a white board and scribble on it without
damage. Should any one be interested, it came from the Map Room of the
Royal Geographical Society in Kensington, where they have the original
plates from which the map was printed, as well as printed copies. (I don't
think those are for sale). They do have flat prints that they are willing to
copy (or were persuaded to do so by my daughter).
I don't know how much they charged but doubt if it exceeded £20 for the two
sheets. which started a bit bigger - about 4ft by 3ft. At least I hope it
didn't!
