Hi list,
I am seeking information re my gr.grandfather, JAMES PEARSON CUTHBERTSON
of the Royal Guernsey Militia. Am already aware that individual
soldier's records are assumed destroyed in 1940 demilitarisation.
JPCuthbertson retired from British Army in 1878 after 20 years service,
and probably joined Guernsey Militia. In reorganization of the Royal
Guernsey Militia in 1880, he became a Sergeant Major in the 2nd Regiment
(North regiment). In 1881 Guernsey census, he's listed as Chelsea
Pensioner, presumably since he was permanent staff, but it's not likely
he was drawing retirement funds.
1881 census lists address: Soldiers Retreat, Les Baissieres, St. Peter
Port. It was at this location that James' first wife died Jan.10, 1890.
She was Charlotte Louise nee Lepage, born May 27, 1844, baptised June 16,
1844. (Another Charlotte Lepage was born in 1845.) James remarried abt.
1892 to Harriet Rendle.
By 1893 he is listed as a Warrant Officer, still in the 2nd Regiment
(North) of the Royal Guernsey Militia.
While in the British Army, he was in the 61st Foot. His birthplace is
listed as Lisburn, Antrim County, Northern Ireland.
Seeking any information on James - thanking you in advance for your help.
Regards, Keith
