Hi Andy,
My exercise in lateral thinking.
>If this is my Eliz. VENNEMENT, where is her father, who hasnt died by 1874.
He is unlikely to be at sea, as his occupation >was carpenter and farmer
repectively on the certificates I have,
I've had several marriage (Aust) certificates that have indicated father's
occupation, because that is what is asked, even though the father is
deceased. No indication at all that he is dead.
>and where is her mother. Surely not the same 63yo living by Thomas?!
And why not? possible.
So, father COULD have died, or run off with another woman, then her mother
Elizabeth (nee Payn) went home to live with her widowed father (Phillip),
resuming her maiden name? and the census taker put her in the homemaker
position of course. Thomas? could be a sibling you weren't aware of?
Too much lateral thinking?
What about another one? Elizabeth was orphaned and she and Frances went to
live with grandparents.
