Subject: [CHAPMAN-L] Chapman, Nathaniel (1761-1829), Virginia, USA
Date: Mon, 4 May 1998 12:46:36 EDT
I am currently searching for the family of my 4th great grandfather, Nathaniel
H. Chapman. He was born in 1761 near Watering Branch, VA (present day
Lynchburg, VA) and may have lived his childhood in Cumberland County, VA.
According to his sworn testimony, he enlisted for the Revolutionary War in
Cumberland County, VA (later testimony by his widow states he enlisted in
Amelia County, VA). He served as a private in the war and was a POW on the
British prison ship, Belvidere, for nine months. He also testified that he
moved from Cumberland County, Va to Bedford County, VA in 1784 with two
friends: Jeremiah Basham and Elisha Bowles. Nathaniel had a brother named
Thomas Chapman who served in Virginia's 14th Regiment and lived in Kentucky
after the war. Nathaniel is listed as his only heir in the Bedford County
Court Order Books (1828). His sister Elizabeth married his war buddy, Elisha
Bowles, and lived on property next to his farm. Nathaniel married Elizabeth
Coleman in Franklin County, Va in 1791 by Rice Haggard (minister). Issue:
Henry Harrison, Nathaniel Jr., MaryAnn Jones, Lydia, John S., Elizabeth S.,
Jane, James, and Chloe.
Any assistance with the search for Nathaniel's parents and/or siblings would
be greatly appreciated! I am willing to share any information I have on this
Chapman family. I have five generations of information on this family and
would like to compare notes with anyone related!
Thanks!
Angela Chapman Brigman
