Subject: [CHASTAIN-L] more on the letters of E. W. Chastain
Date: Sun, 04 Jul 1999 16:24:12 -0400

I just read a bit further in the book. I don't see any more letters
written in his words but I will quote from the book concerning another
letter sent to Gov. Brown by Mr. Chastain.

"On August 19, 1863 he again writes saying the raiders have taken over
Murphy, North carolina. He once more asks for aid stating Major West
from Ellijay came one day but was no help. His last letter was written
on November 1, 1864. Col. Chastain states "the entire section is
overrun." He asks to organize a regiment of local men from those
former southern soldiers who have come home to protect their families.
He continues that help is desperately needed.

This final passage concerning the letters of the Chastains, as well as
the letters I quoted earlier, are found in the chapter The Confederate
Soldiers- Fannin County. According to the index, the section on the
Civil War in Fannin County, Georgia was researched by G. Cook, P.
Abernathy, and H. Jabaley and written by K. Thompson and L. Weese.
