You are in a great place to start.
I'm not real great at this myself but there are many friendly
folks on this and the other Rootweb Cherokee site's that are a lot of help.
I've always been told to start with myself and go backwards.
Your parents where were they born, where did they live??When were
they born. Listen to family stories. Where there's smoke there's fire.
Sometimes you got to get through a lot of smoke to get to an ember.

Mostly, ask the list. as I said they are a great group and very
helpful.
