Hi Helen and all:

Thank you for the welcome Helen. My name is Alan Barnard,
and like you I am an ex-pat Brit, but hail from Manchester where I spent the
first 38 years of my life. I spent many happy hours hiking, cycling and
motoring around the Cheshire countryside. I was evacuated to Somerford Hall
Camp, Congleton during the war - the last of three places to which I was
evacuated.
My gt.grandfather Thomas BARNARD was born in Beccles, Suffolk, and
in 1845 in Wigan, married Mary WALTON who was born in Stockport c.1826,
apparently the daughter of William Walton and Margaret (nee
Tunercliffe/Tunicliffe). I have been looking for the marriage of William and
Margaret in Stockport for the last 15 years or so without success. Either
they were never married, or, maybe Margaret was a widow and married under a
different surname. They appear to have had three more daughters, Sarah
(c.1828),
Hannah (c.1839) and Elizabeth (1843). If anyone knows anything about the
Waltons or Tunercliffes I will be eternally grateful!!
The Barnards became well known clay tobacco pipe makers in
Stockport, and the last of them, Thomas junior, died there in 1931.
You mentioned Alderley Helen. I have a cousin presently living in
Alderley Edge,
and I and my wife hope to be visiting her there next February.
Finally - I am a member of the North Cheshire FHS, the Manchester &
Lancs.FHS,
and the Suffolk FHS, in addition to subscribing to the Suffolk, Glamorgan,
and Manchester & Lancs mailing lists.
