Hello all!
Silly subject, but I want to thank Gordon Longmate for sharing the great
story with us. To me, this is the real meat of family history. Names,
dates, locations, etc. are the bones, but stories are what make it
interesting.
My second thank you is to Jane in Vancouver for the heads up about the
Stockport history URL. A really special thank you actually.
As some of you may recall from my introduction to the group, I have an
ancestor, my g-g-grandmother, Frances Hope who is supposed to be from
Stockport. Family legend also has it that the family in Stockport were
hatters. Not surprising, since the industry was so large at one time that
a lot of the population were involved in it. When I checked out the map of
Stockport on the URL, I immediately saw a street named Hopes Carr and
followed the link to the factory system article. I learned that Hopes Carr
may have got its' name from the hat makers Thomas and John Hope who lived
in the area. Also, an Edward Hope had a mill which stood near the NE
corner at the entrance to Hopes Carr.
That is what I both love and hate about family legend. It contains just
enough truth to lead you along, but not enough information to prove
anything.
If anyone, has any information at all about the gentlemen mentioned above
such as dates, names of children, etc., I would be most grateful.
Meanwhile, I will remain excited at finally finding a potential link to the
lady that emigrated from there in 1842.
