Hi folks!
Have tried to send a message to Tina Gemmell and as
I have been so far unsuccessful, thought I'd try to contact
Tina, hoping she might see this via the Cheshire Newsgroup.
The message: Dear Tina
I am contacting you regarding your interest in the Ball family.
Noticed your entry via Cheshire Newsgroup.
I am researching the Ball family with particular regard to a
William Ball who married Mary Phelan (my G-G-GM) in
1841 in Melbourne, Vic., Aust.
William Ball's history is so far unknown - parents; date and
place of birth and death a mystery. I do know he was possibly
a seaman and according to Mary's second marriage certificate
he 'died' 1848.
Recently a 'bomb shell' hit with the discovery of a letter written
nearly 30 years ago (author now deceased) which inferred William
Ball was some how connected to Henry Lidgbird Ball, Commander
of 'Supply' which sailed in the First Fleet in 1787.
I have uncovered the following:
Henry bapt:1756 Woodchurch Parish, Irby, Cheshire
D:1818 Mitchan
F:George Ball; B:1725 Chester; D:1779;
M:Lucy Weller Stringer; B:1733; D:1800; Bur:Tenterden
George & Lucy produced 6 children - only two known:
John Longford B:1755 and Henry Lidgbird B:1756.
George also had two illegitimate children:
George; D:1790 as Lieutenant RN and
Mary; D:1820.
Henry Lidgbird Ball took a convict: Sarah Partridge, alias Roberts
and their union produced: Ann Maria Ball B:1789 Port Jackson, NSW
who married Joseph Freeman Rattenbury.
Henry married Charlotte Forster in 1802 (D:1803) then he married
Anne Georgianna Henrietta Johnston in 1810 at Kingston Upon Thames,
Surrey, England. No children were produced from either of the above
marriages as far as my research has shown.
If 'our William Ball' is connected in some way to this Henry Lidgbird
fellow, I can only assume he was descended perhaps from Henry's siblings
family, as Henry apparently only produced one daughter.
Hence my contact with you, Tina. It seems the Ball family was a
sea-faring one and connected to Cheshire and I cross my fingers the
above will mean something to you.
I have my suspicions regarding 'our William' and feel that perhaps he 'just
took off', leaving Mary with four children, the youngest, George Michael
B:1847 at Port Fairy, Vic. Mary united with Lucius Forsyth and together
they produced five children, the first being born in Oct.1849, Port Fairy.
Mary & Lucius did not marry until 1874, so perhaps Mary had to wait a
few years (25!) before their union was made official.
The descendants of Mary Phelan and her sister, Anastasia, are holding a
reunion in Cootamundra, NSW in April this year and I would love to solve
this mystery soon in order to inform my 'newly found rellies' at this
reunion.
Would love to hear from you, and my apologies if I have taken up your time
unnecessarily.
Happy Hunting
