Being new to the list, I have watched and waited for a few days. I
have added my names of interest in Cheshire to the Cheshire Surnames
Directory, but thought that it could be helpful to list them here as
DARCY / WOOLLEY Stockport, Disley
My gt-gt grandfather John DARCY married Elizabeth WOOLLEY in 1819 at
Stockport St Mary, following which they had two daughters baptised at
Disley - Ann in 1820 and Mary in 1822. There were at least seven more
children of this marriage - Martha, Elizabeth, Matthew, Catherine,
Margaret, Agnes and Maria b 1841 at 10 Arlington Street, Salford. Still
looking for details of the other six (and any other children they may
have had). John was from Ireland and the family were Catholics.
Nothing known about Elizabeth WOOLLEY at all. Thought to be from the
Family found in 1841 Census at Salford, gt-grandfather Matthew DARCY not
at home with the family. Not found in 1851 Census - unreadable.
GRIMSHAW / RIDGWAY Macclesfield, Prestbury
John GRIMSHAW married Frances (Fanny) RIDGWAY at Prestbury in 1809,
seven children baptised at Macclesfield. Found in 1841 Census at
Salford, daughter Ellen married Matthew DARCY at St Mary's, Mulberry
Street, Manchester in 1844.
Did Anglicans marry Catholics in those days? - or is it possible that
the GRIMSHAW's were also of the Catholic faith?
RIDGWAY / READ Macclesfield, Prestbury 1700's
James RIDGWAY married Phoebe READ 1786 at Prestbury, daughter Frances
bapt Macclesfield 1789.
READ / MOTTERSHEADMacclesfield, Prestbury
Henry READ, widower and Elizabeth MOTTERSHEAD married Prestbury 1760 -
parents of Phoebe bapt 1769 at Macclesfield.
Henry READ married Elizabeth HARVEY 1739 at Prestbury.
No other children of either marriage known to me.
If you have any interest in these families, I would love to hear from
Joan (Tauranga, New Zealand)
