Subject: ARDERNE family connections

Hi Phillipa,
I,m acknowloging at long last, an E-mail you sent me on
regards the Sth African ARDERNEs. I,m sorry its taken awhile to reply but
I have been trying to catch up on everything following a major operation and
then the crash of my computor which resulted in me losing all my files I had
on the old hard-drive.I have been researching the ARDERN/Es & ARDENs of
Cheshire now for some 25 years and do have quite a lot of information on
paper about various lines including the Sth African links.
Cheadle is part of Cheshire just like Stockport & Manchester areas are.
HARDEN HALL or ARDEN HALL as it is now known is situated in BATTLE LANE in
BREDBURY, STOCKPORT. and was the main family residence right up until the
1820s. This was regarded as their Country residence and their town residence
was UNDERBANK HALL which was built in the 15th or 16th centuary. Sadly
this was all lost thru the extravagance of the 2nd LORD ALVANLEY, WILLIAM
ARDEN who was regarded as a Regency Buck (a friend of the Prince Regent) and
he drank & gambled away his inheritance. This in-turn lead to the break-up
of the family estates. UNDERBANK HALL went up for auction and is now The
National Westminister Bank in the main Stockport city centre. HARDEN or
ARDEN HALL was for some years been owned by the Feilding family.( Dont know
if it is still in their ownership or not). The main part of it being
slightly derelict.
Other variations of the ARDEN or ARDERN names can be attributed to the ARDEN
or ARDERNEs OF HARDEN, are HARDEN & HARDERN.
I have found over 30 variations of the surname due mainly to the way early
scribes wrote down what they thought they heard pronounced and how they
thought it should be written. The different accents for different areas that
the family lived in didnt help either.
Back to your Sth African branch, I see you have had a few people respond via
the lists , one being a distant rellie of mine BRUCE ARDERN who has been
doing an in-depth study of the TIMPERLEY & ALTRINCHAM ARDERN/Es.
I am doing a more general study of the ARDERN/E & ARDEN names and variations
in Cheshire. Between Bruce & myself we have quite a bit of info on the
family.
All our lines do eventually connect, with the Sth African branch retaining
the E on the end of their name. They descended from PHILLIP ARDERNE of the
Oak in Sutton ,near Macclesfeild who married MARY BROADHURSTof Midgley on
11-Nov 1664 at Gawsworth. Their only son was a JAMES ARDERNE of the Oak who
married twice. Both wives had the name Mary .
(The Sth African branch thru his 1st wife Mary, & HENRY of TARPORLEY was by
his second wife, Mary.)
JAMES by his 1st marriage had 5 sons and 2 daughters. The sons being JOHN,
JAMES, PHILLIP(who married a Phobe WYCH and from who the ARDENs of Tarvin &
Bunbury descend), HENRY, and RALPH ARDERNE who married a MARY OULDE of
Tarporley..
RALPH was known as RALPH ARDERNE of the Hill ,Tarporley and he and MARY had
1 son ,JOHN, and 6 daughters.
JOHN married ELIZABETH BOSTOCK and they had 6 children, one of the sons
being a HENRY ARDERNE who married an ELIZABETH DODDS at St Marys , Newington
in Surrey and their eldest son RALPH HENRY ARDERNE shifted to South Africa
and it is through RALPHS 2nd wife JOANNA ALLSOPP that they had 2 sons and 7
daughters.
One of RALPHS brothers, RICHARD CREWE ARDERNE who married an ANN JOHNSON
also followed RALPH to the Cape and he had 2 daughters and a son .
It is from these two brothers that the Sth African lines of ARDERNE are
descended from.
If you need more info on this line feel free to e-mail me direct on
. I am also sending your reply back via the Cheshire
list as well as the Lancsgen list as it maybe of some interest to all the
other ARDERN/E & ARDEN researchers.
Regards,
Graeme Ardern N.Z.
