My DITCHFIELD family resided in Rostherne, High Legh, Mere and Grappenhall
around 1800. I have seen the parish registers and recently visited the
churchyard ( unfortunately, about 200 miles away). Typically, it was pouring
with rain and my wife was getting very bored, but I did locate one grave of
a DITCHFIELD family, not yet linked to my known ancestors. The graveyard is
very overgrown with grass growing over the surface of the ledgers, most of
which were laid flat. This a bad and a good thing. Bad because you can't see
the text without stripping back the grass on each grave, but good because it
appears to protect the inscription. Many that can be read directly are worn
and difficult to read.
I plan to return when the sun shines!
While I was there, I spoke to the incumbent at St Mary's about monumental
inscriptions, and he suggested that I should write to him giving the details
of the person I was seeking. I was hoping to be able to scan a list, ideally
indexed, but life, and death isn't like that.
He was rushing off somewhere and I didn't get his name. I think he was a
rector, so c/o The Rectory, Rostherne should get him.
If you find another source of the MI, I would appreciate it if you will let
me know the location/reference/source. And if you have the time and should
see any of the names below, TIA.
