Hello Listers
Two messages.
Firstly can I say thank you very much to Charles Ashton, Karen Glaser, JC
Halbrooks and John of Stonington, Connecticut for information about the
location and history of Cheshire, Connecticut. I've been looking for an
excuse to do a return visit to that beautiful part of the world (I paid a
quick visit to Westport some 4 years ago), maybe I can persuade my husband
he'd love to do some research into the BROOKS family of Cheshire.
Secondly I must share with you a piece of pure serendipity I had earlier
today. Thought I would help out John Birtles of Adelaide by looking up his
BIRTLES ancestors in the 1881 census of Great Budworth. I found them there
in Church Street, and after I had copied the information I noticed a Clara
HICKSON in the next household but one. A Clara HICKSON was a witness to
the marriage of my great-grandparents Emmeline HICKSON and Henry Hanley
MAYOR at Witton on 26 October 1887. I never knew where Clara fitted into
Emmeline's vast clan of HICKSON relations, most of whom originated from
Barnton, but now I've found this Clara, who was born in Liverpool, it makes
sense. Emmeline's uncle William HICKSON moved to Liverpool, and Clara is
probably his daughter. Clara was attending a boarding school run by the
Miss Willetts in Great Budworth, and we always had a family rumour about
Emmeline going to boarding school in Little Budworth; but I think Emmeline
may have gone to the same school, and it was in Great Budworth not Little
Budworth. I'm still gloating at this unexpected find! Another twiglet
for the tree.
I have a database of HICKSONs in Cheshire which I can e-mail as an
attachment to anyone who's interested. It's on Excel 7, and has nearly 700
entries on it.
